In fact, there were 743 pedal cyclists killed and an estimated 48,000 injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2013 alone. Sadly, there is high evidence that this is mostly due to distracted driving. While we may think of the tragic scenario where a small child wanders into the street alone, the fact is that the average age of a pedal cyclists killed in traffic crashes is 44 according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

This is an excerpt describing how a local biker died in the Oakland Neighborhood in October of 2015 while stopped at a red light:
    “A car in one of two through lanes attempted to cross over into the turning lane but struck a vehicle behind the cyclist. That car then struck the bicycle, pushing it into the car in front of it and knocking it over, between the two vehicles."
